Aerospace and Defense Sensor Magnets

High-reliability magnets for flight control actuators, satellite mechanisms, guidance systems, and defense electronics — with material selection for extreme temperature, vibration, and long service life.

Target Buyer:Best for aerospace primes, defense subcontractors, and space system integrators sourcing magnets for programs that require extended temperature range, radiation tolerance, and traceable quality documentation.
High-reliability sensor magnet for aerospace actuator

Aerospace and Defense Sensor Magnets application reference selected from the sensor magnet image library.

Solution Highlights

  • SmCo preferred for wide temperature range (−55°C to +350°C) and radiation tolerance
  • NdFeB high-temperature grades for weight-critical aerospace actuators
  • Support for AS9100-aligned quality documentation and first article inspection (FAI)
  • Custom geometries for servo, resolver, LVDT, and torque sensor assemblies

Common Use Cases

  • Flight control surface actuator position feedback
  • Satellite reaction wheel and momentum wheel encoders
  • Missile guidance system sensor assemblies
  • Aircraft landing gear position sensing
  • UAV motor and gimbal position feedback
  • Radar rotary joint angle measurement
  • Torpedo and underwater vehicle speed sensing

Implementation Focus

  • Select SmCo 2:17 for maximum thermal stability and radiation hardness in space and high-altitude applications
  • Review demagnetization margin under combined thermal and vibration loads
  • Provide first article inspection (FAI) reports and material traceability per AS9102
  • Support DFARS compliance documentation where required by US defense procurement

Application Evaluation Matrix

Evaluation MetricTypical RangeBuyer Relevance
Operating temperature range−55°C to +300°C (SmCo 2:17)Aerospace and space applications demand stable magnetic output across extreme thermal cycling.
Vibration resistancePer MIL-STD-810 or customer specMagnet retention, bonding, and assembly integrity must survive launch loads and operational vibration.
Service life15–30 years (platform dependent)Aerospace magnets must maintain field strength over decades without maintenance access.

RFQ Preparation Checklist

  1. Operating temperature range (min/max continuous and peak)
  2. Vibration and shock specification (MIL-STD-810 or equivalent)
  3. Radiation environment (LEO, GEO, or terrestrial)
  4. Required quality documentation (FAI, C of C, material certs, test reports)
  5. DFARS/ITAR flow-down requirements if applicable
  6. Magnet geometry, magnetization pattern, and sensor interface
  7. Program timeline, prototype quantity, and production forecast

Risk and Mitigation

  • Demagnetization from thermal extremes or radiation: Use SmCo 2:17 with high Hci. Validate magnetic output after thermal cycling and radiation dose simulation.
  • Assembly failure under vibration/shock: Design retention with adhesive plus mechanical lock. Test per MIL-STD-810 Method 514 (vibration) and Method 516 (shock).
  • Supply chain compliance gaps: Document material origin, processing steps, and test results. Support DFARS 252.225-7009 flow-down if required.

Buyer FAQ

Is SmCo always required for aerospace magnets?

Not always. NdFeB high-temperature grades (UH, EH) are used in aerospace applications where the operating temperature stays below 180°C and weight savings matter. SmCo is preferred when temperature exceeds 200°C or long-term field stability is critical.

Can you support AS9100 documentation requirements?

We provide quality documentation aligned to AS9100 expectations including first article inspection reports, material certificates, dimensional reports, and magnetic test data. Our facility operates under ISO 9001.

Do you handle ITAR-controlled specifications?

We can work with unclassified technical data and drawings. For ITAR-controlled items, the buyer is responsible for export license determination. We do not handle classified materials or specifications.
